Glen Ridge Computer Screen Controversy

We will reluctantly weigh in here because a lot of people are coming to this (privately run) website because of the story about a screensaver featuring Congresswoman Analilia Mejia.

It is Hispanic Heritage Month
Representative Mejia is Hispanic
Representative Mejia is a Glen Ridge resident
Screensavers this month have highlighted various prominent Hispanics
A screensaver featured a profile of Rep Mejia on the computers of students
Rep Mejia told the NY Post her campaign had nothing to do with the screensaver
Rep Mejia is expected to win her upcoming election by tens of thousands of votes (she won the special election in June by more than 25,000 votes).
It's likely that less than 25 Glen Ridge school students can vote in the election

Our Take: This is a big nothing burger that is getting people excited because of the current political environment. (And we say this as someone who disagrees with Representative Mejia more than we agree with her.)

A successful Hispanic woman who lives in Glen Ridge was highlighted during Hispanic Heritage Month. She says she had nothing to do with this, and our guess is that this was an innocent decision by a teacher or administrator who probably didn't think of the potential internet outrage. Perhaps it would have been best not to touch anything political weeks before an election - that's fair. But the idea that this is electioneering or part of some big plot to help someone in an election is pure silliness.

Meanwhile, this little kerfuffle has highlighted some bigger issues in our opinion. Like Daniel here who is telling his neighbor, who was born in the US just like he was, to "go back to Puerto Rico".
